Things to Ponder at 4 a.m.

oceanmist.com
Occasionally I wake up and don't fall right back to sleep. Like last night. Crazy shit runs through my head at 4 a.m.  Read on.....if you dare:

  • Artichokes. Don't get me wrong, I adore artichokes, but you gotta admit, the first person to eat an artichoke was either starving or irrationally curious. For one thing, they have spikes. They may be called thorns, but they feel like spikes. How many things do you normally eat that have spikes (not that are spiked, like punch and watermelons and rum cake because I'm pretty sure, if you read this blog, that most of what you ingest is spiked. Am I right?)? OK, so you make it past the spikes, and the bazillion leaves, but then there's all that fuzzy shit that you get before the heart. That tells me that the first person was tenacious. And maybe starving. Or crazy. And definitely my hero.
  • My WordPress followers: I switched my blog from WordPress to Blogger a couple of months ago. I didn't have an issue with WordPress but it was easier for my blog designer, the amazing Amanda Oaks, to work in Blogger, so I moved everything over. Or so I thought. I had over 400 followers on WP, and I now have three. Where did the other 397+ go? Should I have created maps so they could find me again?  Did my move piss them off?  I've left a candle burning in my window in honor of them and it will stay lit until they ALL come home. Or maybe it's some grand lesson in humility that the Universe thinks I need to learn. (Note to Universe: I'm humble enough, I promise. May I have my followers back.....pretty please?) If you run into any of my former followers, please bribe....I mean, send them home. Two words: finder's fee.
  • Aliens: As I've mentioned, The (evil) Husband converted me into a Trekkie, so we watch Star Trek series-es (aren't words like this hard to pluralize? Is pluralize even a word??) in their various forms, starting at the beginning of a series and watch it all the way through. We are currently watching "Deep Space Nine." Needless to say, there are lots of aliens in the series. I'm pretty sure aliens exist; after all it would be pretty arrogant to think we were the only ones in the entire universe. My thoughts drift toward other aspects of alien beings too. Like, if you get a room full of Klingons together (not the best looking race in the universe), how do you know which ones are ugly and which ones are hot? This is important, people!
  • Spirits: I love watching mediums like Theresa Caputo, John Edwards and Lisa Williams do their psychic-talking-to-dead-people thing. They say that our loved ones are always with us. Like yesterday, I was scanning some stuff into the computer and listening to Pandora. Some jazzy music was playing and I danced around the office a bit (yes, I was alone. Don't judge me.). Then I reminisced about dancing with my daddy (who passed on 4/27/11) and got the shivers. According to the mediums, that was probably Daddy.....stopping by. Which is fine. But what about those times when you're doing something you don't necessarily want your parents to see.....like that time you put on that black bustier and assorted paraphernalia and paired it with knee high silver boots so you could be all sexy for yo' man? Not me. I'm talking about you. Do you think anyone was......watching? Watching you, not me. Just to be clear.
What do you ponder at 4 a.m.?

Have you been there?

PS: Only TWO more days until I meet The Bloggess.....and Lauren (eeeeeeeee!!!). Bob the Water Cat has issued a challenge (in the comment section) and it has been accepted. Stay tuned........

PPS: How do you like the Yo Momma widget? Is it time to change? Suggestions?

  1. I've been contemplating moving my one blog back to blogger as well. Without having Google Friend Connect (GFC) on wordpress, I find people are less apt to follow imo. Love your blog hon but I don't think I'd be thinking about artichokes that early in the a.m.! :)

  2. If I am awake at 4:00 a.m., which actually happens more often than I care to admit, all I want to do is have the motivation to get my butt out of the bed so I can blog about what goes through my mind.

I am super envious of you and Lauren meeting the bloggess!!!  :)  My book arrived yesterday, tho.

  3. When awaken at 4 a.m. I am so not thinking about artichokes.  BUT!  The back-end of that word, “choke” does come to mind after the puppies, for the millionth time, bark at that imaginary murderer standing outside the bedroom door.  JEEZ! How many times do I need to kick that dude’s butt?

Sorry to read about your lost blog followers. Maybe they were kidnapped by the evil internet trolls and are being brainwashed as I write this?

Regarding aliens… I always believed my husband’s an alien in a human body. Remember Body Snatchers?  What makes me believe this is some of the things he does… they aren’t normal. Like his unwrapping a Subway sandwich over the garbage can, only to place the discarded paper on the table. I mean, he had to literally turn around to place that paper on the table! It’s not normal, I tell you. *LOL*

Sanctity of Spirits… my husband may become one if he doesn’t start throwing his garbage into the pail. Then again, that may not work out well either.  I’ll be sweeping up spectral residue on my floors for, like, ever.

*whispering*  I still see my Scottish Terrier Ben… in the kitchen. Yep, I see ghosts.

  4. Claire, I hope you are right about the spirits.  I would surely love a quick visit from my son.  Today would have been his 40th birthday and he is much on my mind.

  6. I tell The Husband (almost daily) that *tonight* might be the night (if/when I kill him, it'll be in his sleep. I don't want it to hurt, after all. I'm a NICE person).  I'm pretty sure he has mastered sleeping with one eye open.

  12. You crack me up, really, you do. Love the humor, love the voice, love artichokes too, & have always wondered if I'd like Star Trek if I just gave it a real chance.

I should start writing down what I ponder at 4 a.m. ... because yes, I am up at that time often enough to have many a pondering.

  13. Yup, tis normal!  especially at our age lol...now I know why my parents were up at this horrible time when I was sleeping so soundly and fighting to stay in bed....sheesh
Yup our spirits, our energy never goes away, it just change form and our loved ones like to check on the ones they left behind in the physical because they still love us and want the best for us.  If you get goosebumps or notice something that reminds you of them, or are thinking about them, they are with you.  No doubts.  I love watching those shows, and the new one, Theresa cracks me up.  She is so good at it and so very normal too.
Love Star Trek.  The whole bunch of them.  We are not alone in the universes, impossible, that would just be egotistical!
Artichokes, ummm, good question.  I shall stick to the marinated ones in jars where the work is already done for me thank you very much.  :)
That's too bad you lost all those followers from Wordpress.  Did you leave any part of your blog over there  so they could link up here?  I am happy to have 30 followers lol.  Mine is not that old so I'm working at it but I love it anyhow, who cares how many read it eh?  Enjoy the writing since that's how you will get your new followers, like me!

  14. Tsk, tsk, Dorothy! You haven't lived until you've worked your way down to the artichoke heart......each bite dripping with Hollandaise, of course. ;)  I paid WP to re-direct anyone who goes to that site over to the new site. I just feel a little lonely with my three wonderful, fabulous followers (like you!!). Think of the parties we could have! We can't even play poker, for cryin' out loud!

  15. The Husband started me off with "Star Trek: Voyager" because it had a female captain. It was GREAT! We also ran through the Stargate series and it was really good too. Give it a shot!

  18. According to my Wordpress account I'm still one of your followers (of the WP platform). Except I don't get emails about your latest posts. (But I follow you on Twitter now so I'm still up-to-date and I hope that's all OK)
...So, I'm sorry for your loss.

  20. Lol, 4:00 am usually finds me at the computer, trying to get a head start on some work (or even more likely trying to catch up on the stuff I managed to put off) but I'll admit to having spent more time debating the existence of aliens (and ghosts, unicorns, dragons, flying pigs, etc) than many people would consider healthy
